Explanation
of name:
Cestrum is Latin for point (DAV). Nocturnum means nocturnal.
Natural
range:
Tropical America (not Florida)
Recognition:
Shrub with alternate, non-stipulate, glossy leaves, the branches sprawling.
Flowers axillary, borne along the stem, creamy-white or greenish-white,
long-tubular, perfume-fragrant, the petals not curled back. Berries white
Cestrum diurnum
L.
is similar, with tubular white flowers, but day-blooming, and its flowers are
shorter with reflexed petals. It is a FEPPC Category II Invasive Exotic.
Cestrum aurantiacum
has characteristic orange-yellow tubular flowers. It has a somewhat weedy
aspect.

uses:
Grown for its fragrant nocturnal flowers. Blooms repeatedly. Propagate by seeds
or by cuttings. Escapes from cultivation (WU2).
