Explanation of name: Generic name a latinized variant of Louisa, Maria Louisa, wife of King Charles IV of Spain, died 1819 (BA1). Triphylla means three-leaved in reference to the whorled leaves.

Natural range: South America

Recognition: A woody perennial or small shrub potentially rising to about 10’ tall having whorled, fragrant, lanceolate leaves glandular-dotted beneath. Flowers small, white or lavender, arranged in spikes, the inflorescences branching. (Some data from BA1)
