Florida abundance and distribution: Almost throughout Florida.
It was introduced as a forage species, but lacks the nutritional
qualities of other species. The Florida Exotic Pest Plant Council lists this as
a Category II invasive.
Recognition:
Showy grass to 3’ tall with masses of fluffy pink panicles.
Natal grass possesses branching culms that root at the nodes.
The flowers are borne in panicles; their color varieties from purple to
pink with reddish hairs that turn gray with age.
Other: The
pollen is a mild allergen. Uses are erosion control, ornamental, forage. Primarily propagated by seeds, which are readily windborne.
It grows from erect clumps in open and disturbed areas and is most often
seen growing along roadsides.
Prefers dry conditions and invades scrub areas among other habitats.
Germinates under a wide range of temperature conditions with rates controlled by
temperature when adequate moisture is available.
