Explanation of name: For generic name see Alpinia zerumbet. Purpurata refers to the variably reddish bracts.

Natural range: Tropical Pacific

Recognition: Large ginger having upright inflorescences with reddish bracts subtending white flowers 

Landscape Uses: Large rhizomatous perennials for bright situations with rich soil and ample water. Inflorescences can be very showy. Young plantlets (bulbils) form in the inflorescences and protrude between the bracts. These bulbils can be removed and potted.
