Explanation
of name:
Generic name for botanist Prospero Alpino, 1553-1616 (HUX). Zerumbet is
an ancient Arabic word for fragrant ginger roots.

Range:
Tropical Asia, escaped in Florida (WU1)
Recognition:
Large robust ginger with thick, waxy-looking flowers in dangling spikes, the
lip brightly red and yellow surrounded by a white hood.
Landscape
Uses:
A very large, rhizomatous perennial. Cultivar 'Variegats' is most-often grown as
a large cream and green variegated ground-cover and space-filler. The bright
flowers are striking with white, red, and yellow.
